Defiance Tools Heads Across The World to Canton Fair

What is The Canton Fair and Why Did Defiance Tools' Founders, Zoé and Rich, Travel SO FAR to Attend?

Rich and I attended the China Import and Export Fair last week in Guangzhou, China. This fall marks the 124th fair since it started in 1957. The China Import and Expo Fair, also know as "Canton Fair", takes place every spring and fall and operates in 3 phases. Our attendance at the Canton Fair helps us stay on top of trends in hand tools, offer the the absolute BEST Tools to Navigate Life for our retailers and help our consumers defy the difficulty of today and be prepared for the unexpected of tomorrow.

Rich and I always attend the first phase because some of the categories include, tools, hardware, bicycles, consumer electronics and lighting. It will also include an international area for vendors that are not from China.

What is great going to a show of this magnitude is that we get to see so many vendors in one place. Although we love to visit individual factories and showrooms, attending the Canton Fair allows us to meet a lot of people, see their products and narrow down who we potentially want to work with. In addition, we have now been attending so frequently, that it is also a chance to reconnect with our friends and existing vendors.

Sometimes we attend the second and/or third phase depending upon what categories of items we are looking for. In fact last year is where we discovered the Defiance Tools' folding electric bike

This year the phases are:

Phase 1: October 15-19

Phase 2: October 23-27

Phase 3: October 31-Nov 4

A Closer Look at The Canton Fair

Here are some interesting statistics I found on the Canton Fair Website for the last show in the Spring:

  • Location Venue: China Import and Export Fair Complex, 380 Yuejiangzhong Road, Haizhu District, Guangzhou 510335
  • Gross exhibition space:12,755,233 square feet
  • Number of Overseas Buyers: 203,346
  • Number Exhibitors: 25,171
  • Business Turnover (National Pavilion): 30.08 Billion USD

Why Guangzhou?

I guess one could ask, " Why is this particular trade show located in Guangzhou?" Guangzhou is located in Southern China on the Pearl River. It has long been a prominent location of the maritime Silk Road and according to Wikipedia, has been important to foreign trade for two centuries.

For a long time it was the only Chinese port accessible to most foreign traders. Guangzhou lost that designation when the city fell to the British during the First Opium War. After the war it no longer maintained the monopoly of trade and lost business to other ports such as Hong Kong (which is close by) and Shanghai. Today Guangzhou continues to serve as a major port and transportation hub.
