Preparing for Black Friday

Preparing for Black Friday is FUN!

Some of you may not know this but I was a store manager for many years. I understand what goes into getting ready for the big crazy day. I’m not sure how you feel about it, but I enjoyed prepping for Black Friday.

Maybe it was the adrenaline of the day or getting ready for the holiday season, maybe it was the competition with like stores or maybe it was the camaraderie with my team. I think it is a mindset. You are going to spend a lot of time in that building of yours and you might as well make the best of it and have fun!

I know - there is so much to do…

Here are a few tips to help you prepare for Black Friday and for those in our Defiance Tools community who aren't in retail, stick around and let us know in the comments what you are looking for this year.

Prepping the Store

Let’s assume you have already placed your orders (you are putting together your Defiance Tools orders – right?), the merchandise is in the store and you have planned out where to highlight all of your Doorbusters, Special Buys and Advertised specials.

But what about sprucing up the building too? There are going to be so many people walking through your doors and you want to make it memorable for them. In this day of competition – you want them to pick you!

Here are a few ideas to do before Black Friday is upon us!

Tips to Prepare Your Store for Black Friday

  • Clean the windows.
  • Re-paint areas that may be scuffed up or are showing wear.
  • Take a close look at the bathrooms. I don’t want to offend anyone - but for all of you male managers out there – take a close look at the ladies’ bathroom. To be honest, I can normally tell when the store is run by men. It normally means that the ladies room needs some attention. I’m not sure if it is because men don’t feel comfortable going in there or if it is a low priority. But I can tell you as a past retail manager and now as a consumer it makes a difference to your women shoppers.
  • Do you have enough shopping carts or baskets ready for the holidays?
  • Dust and clean the fixtures.
  • Is it time to strip and wax the floors?

Preparing the Schedule

There was one thing I learned after many years in retail – you need to be fair to your managers and your employees. Once I became a store manager I made a deal with managers. You either had to open on Black Friday or on the Day after Christmas. These tended to be early mornings and busy days. But what this allowed my managers to do was to have a little more time with their families over the holiday. (Again, this was before everyone was open on the holidays).

I also made sure to have the whole holiday schedule out for my managers prior to Black Friday. I know this takes a lot of prep, but your managers will appreciate being able to plan their own personal holiday schedules.

Setting the Ad and Walking It

When I was working in retail we were lucky enough to be closed on Thursday, so I knew my team would get a day off with their families. I had a tradition regarding getting the store ready for Friday. No matter what time you worked on that Wednesday before, each department manager had to come back to prep their department for Friday. For us this meant “walking the ad”.

I worked for a large sporting goods company so we a regional or national ad that we showcased our sales. So, this meant, at the close of business, the signs started going up. When each department had completed putting up all of their signs and putting out any special merchandise for Friday, they would page me, and we literally would walk the floor until I had checked off every item that was in the flyer.

Making Sure Your Managers and Employees Are Happy

My team meant everything to me. From my department managers to the lead associates to the part timers – I made a point to know all of them (and I had probably interviewed them to start too). Black Friday is a crazy and hectic day. I always made sure there was food for the team for throughout the day – you need to feed your people!
